I went into this book without knowing anything about it at all， aside from seeing it recommended on several lists。 I was really surprised when I received it as the overall quality was very high and the presentation of the transparent acetate dust jacket and the wrap around cover art really added a lot of visual interest and depth。 There are a total of six short stories within this hardcover edition and each one is very unique and complex in their own way。 The dialogue throughout the stories was I went into this book without knowing anything about it at all， aside from seeing it recommended on several lists。 I was really surprised when I received it as the overall quality was very high and the presentation of the transparent acetate dust jacket and the wrap around cover art really added a lot of visual interest and depth。 There are a total of six short stories within this hardcover edition and each one is very unique and complex in their own way。 The dialogue throughout the stories was very natural and it allowed you to get lost within the multi-layered dramas。 The framing and artwork were very fitting for the stories as well， and the colors were very subtle consisting of mostly pastels and earth tones。 I believe the overall color palette chosen was a great choice as it really complemented the way the stories were presented。 The writing and a lot of the characters reminded me of the work of writer/director Todd Solondz， although not quite as dark and twisted。 The stories themselves were pretty good for what they are， which is just brief snapshots into the lives of various people dealing with their own life struggles。 No extra content here， just a great presentation of 6 collected short stories from Adrian Tomine。 If you're looking to get someone into graphic novels that want's something a little more mature and subtle， this would be a good starting point。 。。。more

The thing about short stories are that rather than intruding on the character， you’re simply using your keys to be in their apartment when they’re not home。 Adrian Tomine’s sense of timing in when to choose to enter and with precision describe these diverse people’s lives is outrageously good – and then to draw such suggestive and different panels to illustrate the work approaches perfection。

Це неймовірна збірка шести історій про творчість， пошук свого життєвого шляху， сім'ю та моральних орієнтирах。 У якомусь сенсі， це чи не найкраща демонстрація таланту Едріана Томіне й потенціалу коміксу， його можливості дослідити на майже мікроскопічному рівні людські емоції та переживання。 Звісно， це було би неможливо без строгого й точного малюнку Томіне， що працює немов скальпель， препаруючи життя в його повсякденних фрагментах， часто абсурдних і неможливих， але завжди резонуючих на рівні прав Це неймовірна збірка шести історій про творчість， пошук свого життєвого шляху， сім'ю та моральних орієнтирах。 У якомусь сенсі， це чи не найкраща демонстрація таланту Едріана Томіне й потенціалу коміксу， його можливості дослідити на майже мікроскопічному рівні людські емоції та переживання。 Звісно， це було би неможливо без строгого й точного малюнку Томіне， що працює немов скальпель， препаруючи життя в його повсякденних фрагментах， часто абсурдних і неможливих， але завжди резонуючих на рівні правди й емоцій。Усі історії про звичайне， навіть надто буденне життя。 Люди просто живуть， а Томіне немов спостерігає， селективно обираючи найбільш цікаві й важливі епізоди。 Це може бути історія про сучасного художника， який ніяк не може виставити свою дивну інсталяцію。 На поверхні так， а насправді це портрет внутрішніх коливань митця， який то впевнений в собі， то навпаки все кидає геть， а десь там на фоні з ним його дружина （we just can't go on like this）， яка не знає що собі думати。 Іронічно й дуже тонко Томіне робить коментар щодо сучасного мистецтва й загалом буржуазного суспільства。 Далі не менш абсурдна історія про дівчину， яка зовнішньо дуже подібна до порно актриси Ембер Світ （напевно все ж Солодка Ембер）。 Приклад того， як світ уявного нахабно вривається у світ реального， позбавляючи шансу на власний вибір і свободу。 І справді， як позбутися тисячі фанатів， які впізнають тебе в кожному кутку країни？ Вихід із ситуації буде незвичним， хоча й неминучим: зустріч із власним прототипом。 Зверніть увагу тут на ідеальну композицію кадрів та підібрані кольори， які дуже влучно передають увесь абсурд。Історія Go Owls （"Вперед Сови"） теж наче ні про що， адже кого цікавить життя місцевого наркодилера на пенсії， який продає маріхуану підліткам？ Та й сам герой зовсім не є привабливим， але попри всі мінуси з ним лишається молода дівчина， яка， здається， й сама не знає що тут робить。 Мені здається， що Томіне тут хоче сказати про те， що ми часто гаємо своє життя на дурниці， тому нема чому дивуватись， якщо з вами в кінцевому випадку трапиться щось безглузде。Translated， from the Japanese， （"Перекладено з японської"） та Intruders （"Зловмисники"） мені видались найменш цікавими。 Перше оповідання надзвичайно красиве візуально。 Тут Томіне справді показав свій талант як блискучого ілюстратора， випрацьованого роками в The New Yorker。 Щодо другого， то це стилізація під кримінальну історію， нічим не виразна навіть візуально， хоча й розкриває певним чином інший рівень мистецького хисту Томіне。Діамантом збірки є Killing and Dying （я би переклав "Сміх і сльози"， відсилаючи до нашої української фрази "крізь сміх і сльози"）。 Це історія про дівчину Джессі， яка вирішує бути стендап коміком （комікинею？） попри те， що виглядає трохи незграбно й має певні проблеми з мовленням， тобто заїкає。 Усе наче проти неї， але матір підтримує її намір。 Інша річ， що в мами виявляють рак， тому дівчині доведеться в якийсь момент рухатись самій до своєї цілі попри увесь біль і сумнів。 Томіне працює тут із дуже роздробленою сіткою панелей， переважно в кількості двадцяти， скурпульозно виписуючи відтінки емоцій персонажів， які проходять через низку життєвих випробовувань як єдина сім'я。 Важко не згадати слова Зедді Сміт， авторки "Білих зубів": "Він має більше ідей на двадцяти панелях аніж інші новелісти мають протягом усього життя"。 Найбільш вражає тут те， що складні й болючі епізоди Томіне подає тихо， спокійно， але від того серце розривається не менш。 Сімейна підтримка， боротьба із власними страхами й цілеспрямованість -- ось основні теми цієї історії， яка ще довго не відпускає після прочитання。Кому можна рекомендувати цю збірку？ Думаю， що не тільки любителям альтернативи， графічних романів і жанру slice of life， у якому блискуче працює Томіне， але й усім поціновувачам міцних історій。 Це гарне знайомство із невидимою і невідомою реальністю мальописів， які на повну можуть розкрити людські драми завдяки майстерному володінню композицією кадрів， кольорам та діалогам。 Холодна， раціональний форма Томіне лише стримує усю ту палітру складних емоцій， моральних і душевних коливань простих людей， яким щодня доводиться робити вибір， жертвувати чимось， шукати щось。 Зрештою， щодня проживати своє життя， яким би воно не було。 。。。more

This is a collection of six short comics （ranging from 8 to 24 pages）， which were originally published as issues #12–14 of Optic Nerve。 All of them share a focus on flawed characters and broken lives， and a certain air of tragedy， but they exhibit an impressive range in terms of the ways they approach their subjects。 Below I address each one individually， in the order they appear。The collection starts on a high， with a 19-page comic titled A Brief History of the Art Form Know as "Hortisculpture" This is a collection of six short comics （ranging from 8 to 24 pages）， which were originally published as issues #12–14 of Optic Nerve。 All of them share a focus on flawed characters and broken lives， and a certain air of tragedy， but they exhibit an impressive range in terms of the ways they approach their subjects。 Below I address each one individually， in the order they appear。The collection starts on a high， with a 19-page comic titled A Brief History of the Art Form Know as "Hortisculpture"。 This takes the form of a series of newspaper comic strips: cycles of six black-and-white four-panel strips followed by a full-page full-colour "Sunday strip"。 Its tone matches its format， with a strong sense of humour that made me laugh out loud several times。 However， this is downbeat， existential comedy， in something of a similar vein to Peanuts。 The protagonist is pathetic figure experiencing a mid-life crisis， searching for purpose， and for escape from his mundane existence。 A lot of the punchlines make me laugh on the outside but cry on the inside。 This is an absolutely perfect comic， and probably my favourite in the collection。The 11-page Amber Sweet boasts gorgeous full-colour art， and the smoothest， most polished appearance of any comic in the collection。 I guess the style could be described as ligne claire， but it's more reminiscent of Chris Ware than Hergé。 Unfortunately， the story here doesn't do much for me – it's engaging enough， but it doesn't really go anywhere， and lacks emotional resonance。The 24-page Go Owls is the story of a relationship between two pretty dysfunctional people， both alcoholics， both seemingly quite poor， one significantly less sympathetic than the other。 It's the collection's most dramatic story， but it's still done in a much more understated way than most authors would tackle this type of subject matter。 It's a sad story and it feels very believable。The 8-page Translated， from the Japanese is the collection's most experimental piece。 Its text is entirely first-person past-tense narration， and its images show events from strange angles， focusing on mundane objects and sections of background， obscuring the protagonists' faces。 The effect is powerful and poetic。 The unconventional visual approach creates a sense of absent-minded distraction， capturing the narrator's feeling of derealization and her reluctance to face her situation head-on。The collection's 22-page eponymous comic is the one that comes closest to challenging the opener for the distinction of being my favourite。 It's an incredibly moving depiction of fatherhood， and of adolescence。 Its protagonist （the father） stands out in this collection as a resoundingly sympathetic male character; he's flawed and awkward and he constantly says the wrong thing， but this all makes him seem painfully real， without ever making me dislike him。The collection finishes with Intruders， a strange 9-page comic about a very broken man about whom the reader is told very little。 It's a suspenseful and intriguing window into a brief episode in the this man's life – a thought-provoking character study。The comics in this collection stand out above all for their honesty。 They're raw and unglamorous， and their stories are told with great subtlety。 I’m a little unsure of how people use the phrase “slice of life”， but these comics are the epitome of how I understand the term: realistic， largely undramatic vignettes about more-or-less ordinary people。 Almost all of these comics are great， and two of them are absolutely perfect。 。。。more

I really liked this！！ My only complaint is that I wish the stories were longer or connected or something。。。。 Many of them felt like they ended very abruptly， just as I was getting immersed in the story and the character development。
